Northbrook Papers – Business Papers [series NP.1]
Overview
The Northbrook Papers consist of the papers accumulated by successive generations of that branch of the Baring family. The firm’s early business papers became confused with the private papers of the founder, Sir Francis Baring. Thus when he moved his home away from the business, he took away with him many business papers. These business papers are now in the custody of The Baring Archive.
The papers are of immense interest giving details of the major transactions such as the Louisiana Purchase in 1803-04; of the Baring businesses in Devon; of Sir Francis Baring’s work as a director and then chairman of the East India Company; and of his work as an adviser to British governments.
